Sony Xperia XZ Long Term Review: Still great in 2017

We re-review Sony’s Xperia XZ smartphone for 2017, comparing against rivals like the Galaxy S8 and LG G6, as well as Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium.

I’ve been using the Xperia XZ on and off for the past six months, since the phone first launched in the UK. However, for the purpose of this long term review, I returned to Sony’s phone full-time for a full week. Here’s my 2017 Xperia XZ review, covering how the design, performance, camera tech, battery life and media chops have fared over time.

Check out our full long term review:

  • i have my xperia xz dual sim 3 months and im very satisfied with the phone…very good performances phone not laggy or something else and the battery life its more than acceptable. The camera its ok,even if it has the problem in low light its still ok because it has the manual mode and the heating its not so disturbing like the z5 even if i play games like mortal kombat X or asphalt 8 … the design its very elegant and beautiful i dont agree also with the no bevel phone … i had before samsung s7 edge but im happy that i change to XZ it isnt too much different between them about performance … im a fan of sony phones i had z2 , z5 and now xz all they are working good i still have home the z2 working.

  • Had the XZ dual sim, but it kept hanging and was very laggy which apparently is quite common. Changed to a g6, which was a breathe of fresh air. Now I'm waiting for the xz1 or whatever it'll be.

  • I currently have the Sony Xperia m4 Aqua which is a terrible phone i have had to replace it two times in only one year of use so I would like the Xz premium but I don't want to spend over $1000 for it plus I'm not overly fussed when it comes to camera and 4K so the Xperia Xz is in my price range and does sound very nice to use will be buying one in next couple of days thanks for the review boosted my confidence in my purchase 😌

  • Unless you need to play crysis 3 on your phone, 3GB of ram is PLENTY. Or are some people hoping to multitask 50 apps?

  • Do not buy this, please do yourself a favor. In my Opinion this is Sony's worst phone so far. Belive me! I have had it for about 5.5 months now and after first 2 weeks, ever since i upgraded to nougat i have regretted this purchase every single day. Battery drain on this one is insane, and there is no support from sony. I have tried every possible solution on this phone found on internet that i could have done without changing rom / rooting / unlocking bootloader, but no luck.

Google these "nougat battery drain" or "phone idle battery drain" or "insane battery drain" or "xperia xz battery drain" or any other sort of battery drain and you will see threads of hundreds of people crying about battery drain all of them who own Xperia XZ (this problem goes out to some other sony phones as well). Even Sony's forums are full of threads of people crying about this, Most active threads with hundreds of posts are on this same problem but no one from Sony responds. The problem is not the hardware, first 2 weeks i was on marshmellow and i would get 7 hours of screen on time. now i have to charge this phone 3 or 2 times a day, 2 times for sure, but some days some small top up during the day as well. maximum screen on time i get is 2 to 3 hours in a charge and screen on times doesn't even matter, phone dies just sitting there anyway. Top battery consuming apps are: 1. "phone idle" 2. Android OS 3. Android system 4. then comes the screen usually.

There are threads about Xperia XZ owners crying about it on : XDA, Sony Forums, Reddit, most other popular forums but no solution yet. I cant return it as I bought it from abroad, I cant sell it because that will ethically be wrong, I have tweeted about this to sony 10s of times I have done everything else in my power to save my this investment. but not even a single response from sony to this day in 5 months.
I cant do anything now but try to save others from making the same mistake i did.

Please flush your money down the toilet you will cry for a day or 2 then you will get over it. but if you buy this piece of crap you will end up flushing your money down the toilet as well ruining months of your life, stress, anxiety because the battery is like electronic lottery it may last a day it may last 2 hours. anyway, Thank you for reading so far, This was about my 12th Sony phone but this for sure is my last Sony product.

  • A good and fair review, had my XZ for a month now and I'm really happy, best phone I've owned or used. Camera is first class, particularly good results in manual mode. Great value at current prices.

  • £25 a month on Virgin atm. I'm still rocking my Z3 but it's getting a little worn now. XZ comes with free pair of Sony headphones worth £100

  • I currently have a Sony Xperia Z5 and am due an upgrade in July. I'm thinking of getting the Sony Xperia XZ, but am wondering if it'll be too similar to the device I have now, but the forest blue does look extremely appealing and I like the look of the camera specifications and the general appearance of this phone. Would you suggest I upgrade to this, or choose something less similar? Many thanks

  • I use X Compact and after 6 months of accurate use back of the device looks all trash. Very scratch prone, like old phones. For cost saving purposes Sony uses cheapest materials and doesn't care about durability. Premium price for budget class materials and finish…

  • hey my opinion of Sony has declined

the bezels don't provide much function, and the display is still the same resolution for the same price as last year Sony flagship , also the software needs improved, it looks outdated in my opinion and Sony Ram management seems to be poor on newer devices due to poor optimization, I wish they continued with the small apps feature as that was true multitasking, also I like the settings menu as it looks pleasant but there's a lack of colour in the UI overall , also Sony are really bad at continuing with software updates and they need to be better at labelling which is their high end smartphone as it is very confusing as a consumer although I feel they should focus more on the budget market as an alternative to the Moto g smartphone series
